UPDATE: Major Crimes Unit investigating Banff death

Police are seeking public assistance in the investigation of a Banff man's death that continues with RCMP's Major Crimes Unit on scene in the mountain town.

Police are seeking public assistance in the investigation of a Banff man's death that continues with RCMP's Major Crimes Unit on scene in the mountain town.

The man has been identified as Michel Lemire, 58, by his employer, Park Distillery Restaurant and Bar, and RCMP.

According to police, Lemire's body was discovered in the Bow River in Banff near the pedestrian bridge at about 11 a.m. on Monday.

RCMP are asking any person who had contact with Lemire on Sunday evening to contact local police at 403-763-6600.

"Investigators are also interested in speaking to a potential male witness," said RCMP spokesperson Cpl. Curtis Peters.

"We believe (the witness) was wearing a yellow snowboard jacket and may have been in the area of the Banff Ave. bridge and YWCA at 11:30 p.m. on Sunday, Nov. 15."

Lemire's death is being treated as suspicious by the Major Crimes Unit and Banff's detachment; however, this is as a precaution to determine whether or not foul play had been a factor.

“Because we don't know what exactly happened we are treating it as a high-risk matter,” said Banff Cpl. Kevin Graff on Wednesday.

Lemire, originally from Trois Rivieres, Quebec, was said to be a "happy-go-lucky kinda of guy," from friends.

An autopsy on Lemire's body occurred on Tuesday, however, police are not releasing the results.
