Alberta Health Services and Environment Canada have issued warnings for residents of the Bow Valley due to smoky air conditions that are the result of wild fires burning in the Northwest United States.
A special weather statement was released on Monday morning (Aug. 24) for Canmore, Banff and Kananaskis Country, while AHS Calgary Region issued an air quality advisory for the Calgary area due to “current and forecasted deteriorating air quality."
The air quality advisory stated even healthy people may notice temporary eye and throat irritation and possible shortness of breath, while individuals with respiratory illnesses may notice their symptoms getting worse as a result of the poor air conditions.
"Forest fire smoke from the Pacific northwest is moving into Alberta early this morning," stated the Environment Canada statement. "The smoke will move in aloft, but will mix down to the surface late this morning or early this afternoon. There is still uncertainty as to how concentrated the smoke will be at the surface, but there could be significant reductions in visibility and air quality."
Residents of the valley are advised to monitor future forecasts and warnings as they will be updated. Go to www.weather.gc.ca for the latest forecasts and warnings.
