Westhead sent to policy development program

The local member of the legislative assembly for Banff-Cochrane, Cameron Westhead, is again travelling south of the border for a leadership and policy development program.

The local member of the legislative assembly for Banff-Cochrane, Cameron Westhead, is again travelling south of the border for a leadership and policy development program.

Supported by the Council of State Governments Midwest, the Bowhay Institute for Legislative Leadership Development offers new lawmakers from 11 states and four provinces the ability to attend the program from Aug. 12-16.

“As our government moves ahead to diversify and green the Alberta economy, effective governance results in policies, legislation and programs that help Albertans and Alberta companies thrive,” Westhead said. “This fellowship offers an important opportunity to learn about policy development and decision-making from experienced legislators in other jurisdictions.”

The program is a five-day intensive leadership program designed for legislators to develop skills to be effective leaders, informed decision makers and understand policy issues. Sessions at the program include policy areas like education, health care and economic development.

The fellowship offered by the Bowhay Institute covers the cost of tuition, lodging and meals and the estimated cost for Westhead’s travel to Madison, Wisconsin is $1,970.

Westhead attended the CSG Midwest cross-border policy conference in July as well. It is a non-profit organization that provides lawmakers with opportunities to share best practices for policy creation and discuss regional issues.
