The body of a 38-year-old male BASE jumper was recovered near Canmore on Sunday evening (Aug. 28).

Local RCMP are investigating the incident, and said the wing-suit jumper died after an unsuccessful jump off Grotto Mountain.

The BASE jumper was with a group, and there does not seem to be any foul play, said Cpl. Steve Sveistrup.

BASE jumping (building, antenna, span, earth) is a sport where a jumper uses a wing-suit in a gliding free fall before releasing a parachute.

There are no area closures to the public while RCMP investigates.

Police were called to the scene around 5:30 p.m. at the popular recreation mountain in Kananaskis Country.

After the BASE jumper had been reported missing, rescue crews began a search party and then recovered the body later that evening.

The Outlook will update the story when more information becomes available.
