A 59-year-old woman was airlifted to hospital after suffering serious head and upper torso injuries on Saturday (Nov. 8) when she plummeted 20 metres down a gully in Kananaskis Country’s wilderness.

The woman has multiple traumas to her head and face and fractured her left arm from the fall, which occurred shortly before 2:45 p.m.

Jeremy Mackenzie, a public safety specialist in Kananaskis Country said her injuries are severe, but non-life threatening.

“We responded with Alpine helicopters, located the party with an air search and observed there was a pretty serious injury at the site,” Mackenzie said. “She was conscious when they found her and airlifted to Foothills hospital.”

Two rescuers slung down from the Alpine in order to package the patient and transfer her to STARS Air Ambulance. She was then transported to Calgary hospital.

The woman was apart of a large group on a scramble route (off-trail excursion) on an unnamed peak south of Baldy Pass just off Highway 40, said Mackenzie.
