Yam heli-tour operation denied

An application for development of a helipad at the base of Yamnuska for a commercial heli-tour operation has been turned down.

An application for development of a helipad at the base of Yamnuska for a commercial heli-tour operation has been turned down.

Jamie Hanlon, public affairs officer for Alberta Environment and Parks in Edmonton, said Rockies Heli Canada has been informed its application for a temporary helipad has been denied.

“There are important cultural and ecological challenges that could not be overlooked with this site,” he said, noting the department does recognize the importance of tourism in Alberta’s economy.

“In making decisions related to public land use – either temporary or permanent – we must balance these important factors with the potential for impact on the environment and other users.”

The Yamnuska area is a region of great scenic beauty, geological interest and biological diversity of habitats – and is an incredibly popular area for climbers, hikers and nature lovers.

The proposal for a helipad at Yamnuska, which was submitted in May, drew strong opposition, including from the Municipal District of Bighorn, conservation groups, climbers and guides.

The MD argued a helipad there did not comply with policy direction in the municipal development plan, namely the natural and protected areas policy and tourism recreation policy.

Rockies Heli Canada lost its lease for sightseeing tours based out of Stoney Nakoda Resort and Casino and therefore went looking for a new location. Alpine Helicopters now has that lease.

Since the beginning of this application process, Hanlon said Alberta Environment and Parks has been working with the heli tour company to identify other potential sites.

“(We’ve) expressed our interest in continuing to work with him to find a suitable location – either temporary or permanent – for his helicopter tour business.”

Rockies Heli Canada did not get back to the Outlook by press time.
