This Sunday (July 12), from 6:45 to 7:30 p.m., The Yoga Lounge (2nd floor – 826 8th St.) is hosting a 108 Oms for Nepal fundraiser to help those affected by the earthquake event.

All are welcome to take part in reciting 108 oms as a symbolic showing of solidarity towards the 9,000 deceased and to show support for those still struggling after the 7.8-magnitude earthquake hit Nepal on April 25, demolishing more than half a million homes.

“We’re going to do 108 oms, and there is a symbolism to the 108,” said Yoga Lounge instructor Nikki Fortin. “It’s quite an auspicious number, and in many traditions it holds a significance. We’ve held events in the past at The Yoga Lounge and I thought with this event, given the devastation in Nepal, and us being a mountain town, and that a lot of people in the Bow Valley have travelled to Nepal, people will have a good sense of what it is like after the earthquake.”

The event is free, with people being asked to make a minimal donation of their choosing.

“All proceeds will go towards an organization called CORE International, which is an organization that works specifically with women and children in Nepal,” Fortin said. “My sister-in-law and brother-in-law live in Katmandu with their children and were there during the earthquake, so we’re also hearing their firsthand experiences and how it’s affected Katmandu and the outlying areas.”

Fortin’s in-laws say one of the ongoing struggles for people affected is rebuilding shelter structures. “My sister-in-law told me about a woman who came into Katmandu to try and access funding, but because her husband has died, she’s not recognized for the funding because she’s a widow,” Fortin said on wanting to donate to CORE for its efforts towards helping women and children.

“People can show up, or register at The Yoga Lounge and no yoga experience is necessary.”
