Young adult organization wants to meet new people

CANMORE – Canmore’s Young Adult Network (CYAN) wants to get to know you better and hopes you want to get to know what it’s all about as well.

CANMORE – Canmore’s Young Adult Network (CYAN) wants to get to know you better and hopes you want to get to know what it’s all about as well.

As such, CYAN is inviting all young adults (aged 18 to 35) to artsPlace on May 29 for an introductory event and movie screening.

Board co-chair Zarifa Salzgeber said the goal is to create a time and place for those who want to meet other young adults in the community to connect.

“The Canmore Young Adult Network exists because there are a lot of young people in Canmore and they are under engaged in the community,” Salzgeber said. “Whether that is volunteering, or having places to meet other young adults, there is no real central hub for young people.

“Our hope is that CYAN becomes the central hub for young adults to get connected and meet people and to find community resources.”

The event will feature free pizza during the first hour, when you can learn more about CYAN from its board and engaged community members, and the critically acclaimed romantic-comedy-drama Love Simon will be screened.

In addition to the movie night, the non-profit also hosts a pasta night and games night each month. The third Tuesday of each month at Ralph Connor United Church beginning at 6 p.m. is a community pasta dinner. The first Wednesday of the month at Good Earth Café hosts board games night at 6:30 p.m.

CYAN launched officially last summer, but began to form in 2015 with the support of Ralph Connor United Church.

The church has helped CYAN access grant funds to form as a non-profit and to hire a part time community development facilitator – Tara Koenig – this year.

“Following last summer’s survey about young adult needs and wants, CYAN has dedicated itself to connecting young adults,” Salzgeber said.

“We saw a gap in this community that needed to be filled, including access to affordable social events and a connection to local government and community resources that help create a sense of belonging and encourage active citizenship. We’re working hard to fill this gap.”
