A 17-year-old Stoney Nakoda First Nation youth wanted on a warrant in relation to the Aug. 7 homicide of Kori Wesley has been arrested.

According to RCMP, the youth was arrested in Red Deer, Thursday (Aug. 11), with the assistance of Police Dog Services. The youth, who cannot be named, is currently in police custody and a judicial interim release hearing will be held.

The investigation remains ongoing and the K Division interview assistance team and forensic identification services are assisting the Southern Alberta RCMP Major Crimes Unit.

The youth’s arrest follows the Aug. 7 apprehension of Tylen Poucette, 20, who was charged with the alleged second-degree murder of Stoney Nakoda’s Wesley, 21. Poucette has been remanded in custody pending a court appearance on Aug. 16 in Cochrane Provincial Court.

On Aug. 7, a Major Crimes investigation was underway for a suspicious death after Wesley’s body was found near the Chiniki Rodeo Grounds on the Stoney Nakoda First Nation

RCMP are not releasing how Wesley was killed, but report Poucette was arrested later that day without incident.

In unrelated charges, last year Poucette was charged for an alleged role in the arson that significantly damaged the Morley Recreation Centre in July 2015.

In April 2016, though, Poucette’s case was given a stay of proceedings on four charges against him due to the Crown not having enough information and taking a year to gather more evidence.

Further, in Nov. 2015, Conroy Poucette of Morley pleaded guilty to break and enter to commit the indictable offence of arson, and to being unlawfully in a dwelling house.

Conroy Poucette was handed a suspended sentence with 18 months probation and a $200 fine.
