Local hoops programs were in tough as Our Lady of the Snows hosted the junior boys south central zone basketball tourney, last weekend (March 6-7).

Banff Community High’s juniors opened play with a 58-26 victory over Three Hills on Friday (March 6), but couldn’t get past eventual tourney winner Bearspaw Christian School in their second game. The 1-1 record, though, put them into the bronze medal game, where they lost to the J.C. Charyk Hawks of Hanna.

In other action, OLS finished sixth in the tournament after losing to Red Deer Lake 68-33, defeating Sundre 29-23 in their second game, then absorbing a loss to Three Hills.

“We finished up in sixth on Saturday after losing a tight game to Three Hills,” said OLS coach Mathew Keefe. “The game could have gone either way down the stretch, but we had a hard time keeping one of their big guys off the glass. Blaise Holloway was the leading scorer for us.”

The OLS win over Sundre was a close one, said Grade 9 player Jadon Domingo.

“We ended up with that win, but it was pretty close throughout the whole game. They had a pretty big team, so most of the points that we got were mostly shots, we didn’t get too many that were layups.

“We were forced to use our guards a lot more and they were pretty good at blocking shots, so you had to take your shot quick to get anything in.”

Bearspaw Christian of Calgary won the tournament after beating Red Deer Lake in the final.
