Mountain bike day returns

In an effort to encourage more children to embrace life on two wheels, Take a Kid Mountain Biking Day returns to the Canmore Nordic Centre on Saturday (Oct. 4).

In an effort to encourage more children to embrace life on two wheels, Take a Kid Mountain Biking Day returns to the Canmore Nordic Centre on Saturday (Oct. 4).

Held in conjunction with the Grizzly Mountain Bike Marathon, a free kid’s mountain bike race kicks off at 11 a.m., and is open to children aged 10 and under, and will include prizes, a bouncy castle, and more. Children will be divided into three age categories, and winners will receive grizzly medals.

“The event is free to encourage parents to ride with their kids,” said organizer Tony Smith.

Rundle Mountain Cycling Club hosted the event in the past, however, for the second year, Grizzly Events has partnered with the Canmore Nordic Centre.

“We keep the course tight in the stadium. It’s a lapped course, which is great for spectators,“ said Smith. “It’s very flat in the stadium, so everyone can try the course. Last year we had kids on run bikes.”

Registration takes place the day of the race at 10:15 a.m., and each child receives a race bib for showing up. Parents don’t have to be part of the Grizzly mountain bike marathon for their children to take part in the kid’s race.

This will be the 11th annual Take A Kid Mountain Biking Day, which is organized each year by the International Mountain Bicycling Association Canada. Worldwide, more than 53,000 kids take part each year; the event includes festival-type events and is designed to develop the sport at a grassroots level.
