When six girls from École Notre Dame Des Monts took to the volleyball court at Lawrence Grassi Middle School on Tuesday (Nov. 5), they managed to write a new chapter in school history.

Named the Ecole Notre Dame Des Monts Loup Garou (the Werewolves), the girls volleyball team became the first ever to compete for the French Catholic school. Under the tutelage of coach Gilles Robert, they lost a 2-1 decision to Lawrence Grassi in exhibition play.

“I’m proud of the girls. We practiced after school every Tuesday for a month and they’re very keen,” Robert said.

There are only 20 students at the school ranging between Grade 7 and 12, so finding enough athletes to create a team is tough. The game is the only one the team will play this year, but Robert said he expects the school to have a basketball and badminton team this year as well.

As for their first game, Robert said he was impressed. Although they lacked experience, they still managed to win a set against Lawrence Grassi.

“They’re not doing too bad,” Robert said.
