Non-profit organizing trail rebuilding at Nordic Centre

Friends of Kananskis Country are helping rebuild damaged trails at the Canmore Nordic Centre after flooding in the provincial park in June.

Friends of Kananskis Country are helping rebuild damaged trails at the Canmore Nordic Centre after flooding in the provincial park in June.

Mike Shragge with the group said rehabilitation of trails is being taken on in conjunction with staff at the Nordic Centre.

Those interested in helping out, he said, are encouraged to sign up beforehand. A trail rebuilding day on June 26 saw 59 volunteers show up and Shragge said knowing how many people are going to help lets the organization prepare with safety equipment and the right number of crew leaders.

“It is important to underline we want people to sign up before they show up,” Shragge said.

In particular, he said, teenagers in the community may want to consider the volunteer opportunity.

“Teens can be a very important part of the recovery during the summer months,” he said.

Friends of Kananaskis have scheduled dates for trail rebuilding on July 11, 14, 24, 31 and Aug. 3, 7, 10, 28 and 31.

With initial reports on the remaining Kananaskis park areas suggesting damage is extensive, the group is expecting to make a call out for volunteers for The Sheep, Peter Lougheed and Canmore area in the near future.

Email [email protected] to sign up for volunteering.
