It is over.
The final race of the Canmore Nordic Centre’s biggest season since 1988 is in the books, as ski racers chased the last points of the season in a bid to make the Alberta provincial team on April 1-3.
The Alberta Cross Country Championships (formally known as Sharkfest), saw temperatures in the high teens, lots of slushy snow and plenty of strong racers.
Canmore Nordic Ski Club left the competition behind with 20 medals, with Eric Fabbri, Maya Fish and Matt Strum all laying down a gold medal performance in their respective categories.
Other medal winners included: Jack Menzies (bronze, juvenile boys classic), Wil Pollard (bronze, juvenile boys skate), Xavier McKeever (silver, midget boys classic and skate), Luke Fricker (bronze, midget boys classic and skate), Alison Gourlay (bronze, juvenile girls skate), Anna Sellars (silver, junior girls skate), Nadia Fish (bronze, mini midget girls classic and skate), Ryder de Nys (silver, minimidget boys skate).
Sellars, Gourlay and Anita Martin teamed up to win gold in the juvenile/junior girls relay, while Devin Manktelow, Fricker and Fabbri won silver in the juvenile/junior boys division.
Matthew Gillett, Sebastien Parent and McKeever won silver in the mini midget/midget boys race.
The biggest battle was for the Alberta Cup overall points total. Locally, Fabbri (juvenile boys) and Isobel Hendry (midget girls) of Canmore Nordic both won their respective overall age categories, while McKeever took second in midget boys ahead of teammate Fricker, who was third.
