OLS hosts zone volleyball

Hosting the 1A schools top regional tournament, Our Lady of the Snows Senior Boys volleyball team finished sixth at the 2014 south central zone senior boys volleyball tournament on their home court on Nov. 14-15.

Hosting the 1A schools top regional tournament, Our Lady of the Snows Senior Boys volleyball team finished sixth at the 2014 south central zone senior boys volleyball tournament on their home court on Nov. 14-15.

Their first matchup was against AKCS on Friday (Nov. 14), where they played three close games, but lost two games to one.

“We came out strong for our first game, however we just weren’t able to finish it unfortunately,” OLS member Carter Behm said. “They were a team we were hoping to be able to beat but we just didn’t play our best unfortunately.”

It was 25-18 in the first match with AKCS coming back 25-16 for the second game. The third game saw momentum seesaw until AKCS came out on top 25-21.

OLS then faced off with Rosemary. With the loss to AKCS still fresh in their minds, they beat their opponents handily in two straight games.

“That was a different story there,” OLS player Kyle Edwards said. “We were kind of disappointed by the AKCS game and we did the opposite with Rosemary, we went in thinking they were just too good and too hard to beat and we psyched ourselves out so it was kind of a blowout on their part but all-in-all we were able to pick up some stuff – Rosemary’s a very strong team and I’m happy with how well we were able to do.”

Next came the Acme Redmen match-up, where OLS was hoping to keep the momentum in their favour.

The first set saw OLS come out strong with a two-point win of 28-26, but lost the second match 25-20 with a final 15-4 match knocking OLS out of the tournament.

“We saw the game against Rosemary and Acme the previous day and we knew what we were going up against and we kind of got the tempo up and we knew what we needed to do,” OLS player Noah Nadal said.

“The whole time we played them it was like a story of catch up,” Edwards said. “They would get a bunch of points on us and then we would come back and unfortunately we just couldn’t come back on our third set.”

“I’m actually happy with the way that game turned out because we actually came out quite strong in the first game and a lot stronger than I thought we were going to after Rosemary,” Behm said. “We just couldn’t finish it, but I feel that we did really well considering how our season went and didn’t have too many games this year.”

CCHS also had four teams in Zones on the road for zones, all of which failed to advance to the playoffs. The CCHS girls came the closest, missing the playoff spot by a handful of points after their captain Sara Pauls rolled her ankle the night before the big tournament.

The CCHS Senior Boys won two games, but failed to advance against strong competition.
