Geerthana Somas skated her first flawless program at the novice ladies level to win gold while sister Savina Somas and Lisa Duplessis took silver on Saturday (Sept. 26) at the biggest local figure skating competition of the year, the Canmore Fall Invitational.

With 275 registered skaters, including many of the province’s best, the Fall Invitational proved to be a “can’t miss” competition across Western Canada, which added extra lustre for the medal winners.

“We did better than expected,” said coach Cynthia Ullmark. “It’s a prestigious competition this year because the top skaters in Alberta, and some from British Columbia and Saskatchewan, were here.”

The win was particularly sweet for the eldest Somas sister (Geerthana), as it was the first time she’s completed her new program error-free. She landed two double axles and a triple salchow in her program for the win.

“That’s a first for her. She can build on that. Last week she did the program with one error. In competition, she pulled it out,” Ullmark said.

She will now switch her focus to provincial championships and ultimately chase a strong result at sectionals, where she will face the best in Canada.

Savina Somas competed up a category and still managed to medal. Ullmark said this is a building year for the pre-novice skater, as she must master more jumps and difficult elements.

“Savina did everything she could do. Our goal was for her to skate better than her last competition in August, and this one was way better,” Ullmark said.

Duplessis also skated clean in her division, and Ullmark said she looked great en route to her medal. All three have been invited to the Sask Skate Invitational, and have aspirations beyond regional meets. Duplessis’ last competition will be at the provincial level, while the Somas sisters would like a top four result at sectionals.

The three have been at the top of the local figure skating scene for years, and Ullmark said dedication is key to their success.

“Those three go the extra mile and you can see the results,” Ullmark said. “They do everything you ask them to off ice – pilates, ballet, strength training … hard work on a daily message is key.”

Jane Gray also won the open women’s short program, but missed the long program due to injury. She will travel to Barrie, Ont. for her next competition. Niah Baye also skated well and received enough points to reach the provincial level. Chair of competition Bonnie Baye said the event “went perfect” and organizers will aim for a similar sized competition next year.
