What will the next section of the High Rockies trail linking Goat Creek to Elk Pass look like? What is the latest on the Long Loop – the newest trail at the Canmore Nordic Centre? Is it possible to help build backcountry trails?

Answers to these and other questions will come to light at the second annual Trails Fest on June 11 in Kananaskis Village, hosted by Friends of Kananaskis.

“Trails Fest is a celebration of Kananaskis trails, people and culture. The festival is a free, activity-packed day aimed at connecting trail users, volunteers and organizations that enjoy the outstanding trails and environment of Kananaskis Country,” said Friends of Kananaskis program director Nancy Ouimet.

Thirty groups with interests ranging from biking, hiking, orienteering, skiing, snowshoeing and climbing will have booths at the event. Outdoor clubs and outfitters such as the Alpine Club of Canada and Yamnuska will be available to answer questions.

Alberta Parks will provide a trail building demonstration, complete with trail building equipment demonstration.

“It’s about building a stronger and more connected community of trail users. Demonstrating how trails are used is really what this celebration is all about,” she said.

Alberta Environment and Parks will provide an update on its backcountry trail flood rehabilitation program, while McElhanney Consulting Services will deliver a talk on Phase 2 of the High Rockies trail at 11 a.m. Phase one of the trail running from Goat Creek to Buller Creek is close to completion and receiving a lot of use from trail runners and mountain bikers, however, the trail isn’t officially open yet. Phase 2 running to Elk Pass will be completed this year.

“There are four of eight phases remaining. The four sections have been contracted to four contractors who are specialists in trail building,” Ouimet said.

She expects some volunteer work to follow on the trail, and encourages trail users to sign up to help out.

“There is an exhibit fair, a presentation and get out and have fun part, with orienteering, mountain biking and being Wildsmart – those are open for signup. There is also a free barbecue. It is about people coming together to celebrate trails.”
