“We can be really, really good or really, really bad.”
After watching his team challenge three Calgary squads last week, that’s Bow Valley Wolverines coach Chad McLenaghan’s assessment of his team leading into the Big Sky Football Conference home opener.
The local high school football team saw its first two games of the season cancelled, so McLenaghan organized a string of tests for his young squad, which has about 17 rookies in the lineup.
The Wolverines won all three matches and he’s challenging them with a difficult offence.
“We have a dynamic offence,” McLenaghan said. “We pass, throw run – we do everything.”
That offence will be on display this Saturday, Sept. 24 at 1 p.m. at Millenium Park as the Wolverines take on the Olds Spartans. Olds dominated the Big Sky last season and the game will be a good test for the home squad.
“They look to have a strong team this year. It will be a learning experience,” said McClenaghan. “But you never know what’s going to happen. That’s what’s so great about high school sports.”
The Wolverines will be without Paolo De Soto and Thomas McChesney heading into the game. De Soto is battling a quadricep injury while McChesney has mono. Both were counted on to be big parts of the team this year.
“It’s a good time for the younger kids to step up,” McClenaghan said.
He hopes the game will be a learning experience for his players.
“Sometimes they’re half a step early, sometimes they’re half a step late. But it’s about learning from your mistakes at this level.”
Wesley Rose is expected to start at quarterback for the Wolverines on Saturday.
On top of the football game, the Wolverines will hold their annual duck race fundraiser on Sunday (Sept. 25). The Duck Drop will occur at 2 p.m. at Policeman’s Creek from the 10th Street bridge and finish at the boardwalk near Main Street. Cash prizes up to $500 will be rewarded.
Tickets for the Duck Race will be on sale at the Wolverines game vs. Olds.
