BOW VALLEY – A bear warning was issued at the popular Yamnuska Day Use Area, parking lot and surrounding area due to human negligence.

Alberta Parks issued the advisory until further notice on Friday (Aug. 7), noting a black bear in the area was trying to take “unsecured wildlife attractants.”

“Users are reminded to not leave their packs unattended at any time, and to bag and remove all trash and place it in a bear-proof bin or take it with you if bins are full,” a statement said.

To avoid a surprise encounter with a bear, Alberta Parks recommends to:

  • Make plenty of noise and travel in groups;
  • Be aware of your surroundings. Look and listen for bears and their signs;
  • Keep your pet on a leash'
  • Carry bear spray. Make sure it’s easily accessible, and know how to use bear spray.
