Canmore Legion on display this Saturday

The Royal Canadian Legion Three Sisters Branch in Canmore is hoping everyone in the community takes some time this Saturday (June 6) to take part in several important events they are hosting.

The day begins with the Legion’s annual garage sale – which is open for members of the community to rent tables to sell their wares – and continues with an open house for the public to learn more about what the local hub of activity is all about.

Keri Aubrecht with the Legion said Saturday also happens to be the anniversary of D-Day – when Allied Forces landed on the beaches of Normandy in 1944, heralding the end of the German Nazi occupation of France and eventually the end of the Second World War.

There will be information and items on display from Legion Command to commemorate the historic anniversary locally.

Aubrecht said the hope is that the community will attend the various events and at the same time find out more about the variety of things the Legion offers year-round.

“We are hoping this will draw people in to see we are not just a bar,” she said. “You also don’t have to be a member to come in and use our facilities. Our hope is we can draw the community back in.”

Saturday night will also feature Canadian folk legend Gary Fjellgaard at 7:30 p.m. with tickets $20 in advance and $25 at the door.

Fjellgaard is a Juno Award winner and inductee into the Canadian Country Music Hall of Fame and is a champion of the vanishing values and frontier spirit of his western heritage.

The annual garage sale begins at 9 a.m. and runs until 1 p.m., with tables available for $20. The open house featuring Legion activities including pool league, dart league and pitch league will run between 10 a.m. and 2 p.m.

“We will tell you about what the Legion is about and what we have to offer,” said Aubrecht, adding rules have changed over time and community members no longer have to be a member to enjoy time at the Legion, which is also a family-friendly facility.

The Legion also offers totally renovated basement space that is available for rent for events and meetings. The space was heavily damaged in the 2013 flood and has since been restored.
