On Jan. 17, learn about avalanche risks associated with backcountry and out-of-bounds travel. The evening features presentations by snow safety experts, films from the Banff Mountain Film and Book Festival, door prizes and a trade show. Presented in partnership with Avalanche Canada Foundation and Canadian Pacific. Suitable for ages 14 and up.

Walter Phillips Gallery presents Reel Time Film Screening

Reel Time features some of the best films from the Toronto International Film Festival, bringing alternative cinema to the Bow Valley the first Monday of every month. On Jan. 11, Reel Time features Brooklyn, the story of a young Irish woman who crosses the Atlantic to begin a new life in America. Adapted by Nick Hornby (An Education, About a Boy) from Colm Tóibín’s acclaimed novel, Brooklyn is a story universal in its reach yet personal in the telling.

The Musical Encounter Series

Every week, the Musical Encounter Series gives musicians-in-residence an opportunity to trial and explore brand new pieces that have often been created during their time at The Banff Centre. Each performance is curated/hosted by a visiting artist as they introduce us to their creative world and give a glimpse into their residency. Upcoming visiting artists thiswinter include: pianist Lisa Moore (Jan. 15); singer-songwriter Stephen Fearing (Jan. 22); pianist Ronan O’Hora (Jan. 29) and cellist Simon Fryer (Feb. 5).

Banff International String Quartet Competition Announces 2016 jury and Canadian commission

The 12th Banff International String Quartet Competition will be held from Aug. 29 to Sept. 4 in 2016, and you will be able to experience a week of exceptional music making in the Canadian Rockies as 10 of the world’s best emerging string quartets vie for over $150,000 in cash and prizes at the 12th Banff International String Quartet Competition (BISQC).

Hosted by The Banff Centre since 1983, BISQC gives audiences an in-depth and behind the scenes look at the thrill and heartbreak of a live chamber music competition, while providing emerging musicians unparalleled exposure to concert presenters, managers and broadcasters from North America and abroad.
