The Artists of Elk Run are opening their doors this weekend.

Six of 10 studios involved with the Artists of Elk Run (AER), an artist-run collective that represents 15 artists, will be open 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Saturday (June 14) and from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. on Sunday.

“For the studios that are open, the artists will be there doing demonstrations. People can come and see the processes behind the artwork and buy some work if they so choose,” Linda Cote said Monday (June 9).

“It is a great way to engage in the art in a different way. There’s wonderful galleries in Canmore, but this gives people a way to see the processes, ask questions and maybe see a demonstration.”

All of the AER galleries are located within a block of each other and a map is available at each participating gallery, just look for the running elk sign.

AER hosts an open studio tour in spring and again in December.

“This is a nice celebration of spring and a nice weekend for people to walk around and come have a look,” she said. “We’re itching to open the doors and get some people through and have fun talking about art for the weekend.”

Along with Cote’s printmaking studio, the other galleries that will be open over the weekend are Rudi Peet Goldsmith, Of Cabbages and Kings Pottery, Fireweed Glass Studio, Peig Abbot Sculpture and Sunny Raven Gallery.

Abbot plans to host a guest artist from Calgary, Lisa Heinricks, who will paint on site over the weekend.

“One of the neat things I’ve seen coming out of it in organizing a couple of open studios a year, is it gives the artists here a chance to get know each other better. They get together once a month or once every two months, have a gathering in a studio or get out together for dinner. It’s a great way to collaborate with one another and keep up to date with what is going on in the community,” said Cote.
