The 2014 Exposure: Calgary Banff Canmore Photography Festival, which is celebrating its 10th year, is right around the corner and once again the festival is seeking submissions from Bow Valley residents.

The call for the fourth annual outdoor projection night in Canmore is now open and three images from this juried exhibition will appear in a downtown window. The rest of the photographs will be shown during the event, which is scheduled for Feb. 21, from 7-9 p.m. in the empty lot next to the Bow Valley Credit Union.

To ensure better projection quality of the photographs, organizer Patrick McCloskey said Exposure will have a brighter projector and be able to offer a darker environment.

As well, McCloskey said Monday (Dec. 8) the theme for the 2014 competition is My Favourite Place(s).

This can be anywhere at home or abroad, natural or constructed and with or without people.

The deadline for submissions is Jan. 6, 2014. Photographers of any skill level can submit up to five images sized to a maximum of 1024 x 768 pixels at 72 dpi, RGB colour. Each file should be no larger than 500 KB and label each beginning at No.1 followed by last name and first name, separated by underscores. (1_LastName_FirstName).

Entries should include name, email address and phone number. A short bio of 50 words and an artist’s statement of 100 words are optional. Entries can be sent to [email protected]

Like previous years, McCloskey said the Town of Canmore plans on providing fire barrels and hot chocolate.

The three top photographs chosen by the jury will be displayed during February in a window mural at 729 Main Street.

2014 Exposure: Calgary Banff Canmore Photography Festival runs throughout the month of February. The Whyte Museum of the Canadian Rockies started the festival in 2004 to bring more widespread attention to photography as a medium.

“The awareness of photography has been growing through the event and every year there’s been new galleries and there’s been fabulous work,” McCloskey said.

“There’s been some stunning stuff and people really pushing the boundaries, both in camera and in technique. If it wasn’t working, the galleries wouldn’t sign on.

“I’m really glad of it. As an appreciator of photography, I really enjoyed going into Canmore, Calgary and Banff to appreciate these (exhibitions).”
