New show for the birds

Usually, when someone has a moment, it’s something to forget about. But not in Amar Athwal’s case. The Banff local repeatedly has his moments and is more than willing to share them. But it’s not what you think.

Usually, when someone has a moment, it’s something to forget about.

But not in Amar Athwal’s case. The Banff local repeatedly has his moments and is more than willing to share them. But it’s not what you think. In Athwal’s case, it’s all about photography.

About five years ago, when Athwal switched from film to digital photography, he had a list of 10 people that he would send his images to, as well as an accompanying story that spoke of his visuals and the things that motivated him behind the lens. The package is something he coined Moments.

Today, more than 450 people are signed up to receive his weekly treat. During April, he will share a collection of his original images with his loyal 450 and beyond, at the Banff Public Library Art Gallery. An opening reception with the artist and chocolate takes place Friday (April 5) from 7-9 p.m. at the library.

Ten Bird Moments highlights some of Athwal’s favourite avian images. From tiny Rufus hummingbird chicks, to a white-tailed ptarmigan, to an American dipper, Athwal’s photographs capture the fine features not easily detected by the human eye.

With great attention to detail and an understanding of how the birds react to their environment, it’s hard to believe Athwal is entirely self-taught. And his introduction to the craft was courtesy of his parents’ camera that sat unused in Toronto.

“I grabbed it just to record what I saw,” he recalled. “I didn’t think much about the art of photography.”

When not at work, Athwal spends most of his days exploring Banff and Kootenay national parks. Sometimes he’s out before the animals are even up.

“I can’t think of a bad day out there,” he marveled.

For Athwal, the joy of photography goes beyond the simple act of pressing the shutter.

“It’s about connecting with nature,” he said. “It’s no longer just about taking pictures. I know what I like. And there’s the chance that if I like something, someone else will like it too. I like to see people’s reaction. I get a big kick out of that.”

Ten Bird Moments is on display until April 30.
