BANFF – The Town of Banff is taking the precautionary step to close the Fenlands recreation centre and 101 Bear Street, which includes the seniors centre and the Banff Public Library to help prevent the spread of COVID-19.

The closures will remain in place until further notice.

Silvio Adamo, the Town of Banff’s fire chief and director of emergency services, said these closures are significant measures that will help stop the spread of the COVID-19 coronavirus.

“We understand this may be disruptive to people in our community, but the health and safety of all people in Banff is our top priority,” he said.

The Fenlands houses two ice arenas, a curling rink and meeting rooms. All programs in the facility are also closed.

The facility at 101 Bear Street hosts leisure and recreation activities, child and adult programs and a seniors drop-in centre. All programming is cancelled. The 101 Bear Street facility is above the Banff Public Library, which was also closed Monday (March 16).

The Town of Banff activated its municipal emergency plan on Friday (March 13) and also partially activated its emergency coordination centre.

Adamo said this provides more authority to the Town to mobilize resources locally and make decisions to address this evolving situation.

“Individuals and organizations in Banff must take steps to stop the spread of this new coronavirus,” he said.

“Stay up to date with the latest health advice from Alberta Health and updates from the Town.”
