A well-known mama grizzly bear and one of her yearling cubs has been struck and killed by a train in Banff National Park.

Banff's Sally Borden rec centre will open “as early in July as possible.”

A change has been made to the resident parking permit system to allow residents to split their daily three-hour free parking into chunks of time throughout the day instead of three continuous hours.

“None of them have been contact charges this year so far, thank God, but the female comes flying in pretty quick with ears laid back and grinding her teeth, and then you realize there’s probably a calf hidden on the ground close by.”

“We need to celebrate small victories. There’s been a lot of sacrifices made to get here, so we have to honour that," said Heather Jordan, who rang the church bells to celebrate Banff having no COVID cases for the first time since Oct. 1, 2020

With Councillor Chip Olver the deciding vote, council has voted 4-3 to boost mayor and council wages based on the recommendations of an independent public council remuneration review committee.

“The key is really to get ahead of that and right that behaviour so they don’t get overly habituated,” said Dan Rafla, a human-wildlife management specialist with Banff National Park.

Those with family in the Old Banff Cemetery, or community volunteers, are able to take part in the project to preserve the historic headstones over the next two weekends.

“I love my town, I love my community and I want to ensure that I continue to contribute to this place I love,” said Stavros Karlos, who grew up in Banff.
